THE FUTURE OF CLIMBING

THE FUTURE OF CLIMBING

by Cédric Lachat and Guillaume Broust

The documentary, produced by Guillaume Broust, tells the story of our ambassador Cedric Lachat’s journey to some of the most iconic places in the world of traditional climbing. Through encounters with elite-level climbers, including first ascensionists, representatives of local organizations, and representatives of national federations, viewers will be able to learn about the threats to this discipline and personally reflect on the fate of outdoor climbing by considering different points of view.

The Future of Climbing is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2025. The journey undertaken by Cedric Lachat through the most iconic, evocative, and challenging climbing locations in the world (Margalef, Oliana, Fontainebleau, Buoux, Meschia, Switzerland, and the Calanques and Hueco Tanks parks are just a few of them) aims to offer a complete and in-depth overview of the future prospects of outdoor climbing.

The words of more than 20 leading exponents of this discipline, including Alex Huber, Chris Sharma, and Edu Marin, reveal the challenges that the entire movement is facing now or will be forced to face in the coming years.

It’s a guide aimed at raising awareness of the most controversial issues, from the responsible management of some sites, to the dramatic effects of overcrowding on crags, to the risk to the preservation of certain iconic places due to the irresponsible behavior of some climbers. Another aspect that will be addressed in the approximately 50 minutes of running time is the relationship with indoor sport climbing, which — thanks in particular to its inclusion as an Olympic sport and the increasingly difficult rock conditions — has seen an explosion in participation in recent seasons. The opening of many new gyms and the need to adopt increasingly strict measures to limit overuse of outdoor walls will raise a number of questions with an infinite range of possible answers for viewers to discuss.

An immersive experience designed to be savored and then recounted by enthusiasts, who will be able to attend more than 30 screenings planned throughout 2025. The documentary will then be made available as a digital exclusive on the Karpos YouTube channel beginning in 2026.
