JULIEN RANCON

"Anyone who stops trying to become better has already stopped being good" - J. RANCON

BIOGRAPHY

Originally from the village of Puy-en-Velay in the Haute-Loire department of south-central France, Julien Rancon started running when he was still a child. His family introduced him to this world. First, he participated in amateur events in his town, then races on the track and on asphalt. Not until 1998, at the age of 18, did Julien discover the world of mountain running, and it was love at first sight. But it wasn’t just love; he also immediately showed a natural talent for this activity. In fact, in just one year he was able to earn a place on the French national trail running team and finish on the second step of the podium in the team world championships. His career has brought many successes, but medals aren’t everything. Sharing and camaraderie are key principles underlying his passion, which is part of the reason why he has developed a coaching program over the years that allows him to transmit his idea of running and his motivation to the next generation. Today, despite his many years of activity, Julien continues to compete at the highest levels and has no intention of hanging up his race number.

A BRIEF CHAT WITH JULIEN

What led you to mountain running?
I discovered running thanks to my father, beginning with cross country and then some track and road races. The mountains came when a friend was selected for the national team and introduced me to the discipline. I was born and raised in the mountains, so it was the perfect activity for me — one that allowed me to combine my two passions. It was love at first sight!

Where is your favorite place to run?
I’ve always loved the diversity of trail running: it can be practiced anywhere and in many different ways. I like to vary the terrain, the elevation gain, the length, the degree of technical difficulty. I don’t know if I have a favorite place. I’m curious and I love discovering new places every day. Thinking of the variety that the planet offers, it’s almost frustrating not to be able to experience everything.

What’s your specialty?
I come from “classic” mountain running, but over time I’ve come to specialize in shorter trail formats of up to 50 or 60 kilometers.

What are your favorite Karpos shorts?
The Fast Evo — light, practical, and super comfortable. Perfect for running!
